And how often should the carpets be shampooed? My husband is fine with the cat at his parents when he lived there, who has very long glossy fur. We just got married and moved to a townhome with more carpet cover than his parent’s house. Any pet lovers with allergies have any recommendations? Obviously we will be keeping any cat/cats out of the bedroom, and none of the furniture is cloth (except for the couch, which we will get a slip cover for so I can just pop it in the wash to clean it, and eventually get a leather couch instead). We already have a great vacuum (Eureka with an enclosed Hepa filter, was very highly rated on consumer reports for pet fur/dander). I’m going to get a very good pet brush too and brush our future cat/cats everyday (we want up to 2 cats, but will probably start with one just to see). We plan on getting short hairs with courser coats since I heard that is better for allergies. Just so you know what we have though of in addition to cleaning carpets.

KDub asked: Does anyone have any advice for me? My 2 yr old male black dachsund is losing his hair, has rashes in his armpits, and sometimes spits up plhegm. ive been to the vet and they have run blood tests and told me cats but since they were out of my life the allergies have not gone away. when we give him steroids its better but we cant continue with them much longer…
additional info:
we had allergy blood tests done at the vet. it came up pos for cats. but we have completely removed all traces of cats from our lives. we have seen 2 vets. they do now know what to do. we give him fish oil everday. steroids every other day. we have him on specialty anti allergin food. he is energetic and happy other than the hairloss and rashes. sometimes he bites at his feet. we have not had any skin scraping done.

Hi I have a pet Cockatiel that I’ve had for 12 years. I’m pretty sure there lifespan is 20-25 so I’m expecting to have him for quite a while. My problem is that I want to move in with my boyfriend, but he has allergies. Cats seem to be the worst, but pollin doesn’t bother him TOO much. He used to live with a short hair dog, and it never bothered him. If I keep the cage somewhere that’s not in the bedroom, and keep it really clean, do you think it will still bother him?

My boyfriend recently started taking Claritin-D to help with his allergies to dust mites, mold spores and pet dander. While regular Claritin seems to work on his burning eyes and difficulty breathing, it doesn’t help with congestion. He started taking Claritin-D to combat all his symptoms, but is discouraged by the price. His doctor is resistant to write a prescription because it is now sold over the counter. He’s hoping to switch to a Singulair prescription or something similar so that it is covered by insurance, but is afraid that it won’t help with his congestion. Does anyone know if Singulair works as a decongestant as well? If not, what does? Thanks!

I am allergic to a lot of animals but I really want a furry, cute pet. Are there any pets that are known not to cause allergies?
