How can asthma just come up out of no where?

I was diagnosed with adult asthma maybe a year or so after getting sick with the flu and walking pneumonia. Did those illnesses cause the asthma. Up until that point I was a competitive athlete with no problems. Just curious how asthma can just “pop” up like that.
