What’s A Good Pet For A Family Full Of Allergies?

Shelby K asked:

Before we had kids, my husband and I used to have a dog. We loved him a lot, but when we had our second child, we found out he is allergic to all pet fur. My daughter remembers having Eddie, our dog, and really wants another pet. We would really like another dog, but we can’t because my son’s allergies are rather severe. We were looking into cockapoos who are apparently hypo-allergenic, but I don’t want to take a chance with my son. Does anyone have experience with that type of a problem? Also, we have almost eleven month old twins so we don’t feel comfortable having a fish around or any small animal that would be in a open type cage.

I have a friend who has severe allergies and her vet advised her to adopt a Bichon. They are totally hypo-allergenic and she never had any problem….
    Good luck!

Reptiles are hypo allergenic but they need lids to keep them in otherwise I’d have said a snake would be ideal.
Have a look at my profile there’s loads of pets and only my cats are furry

I know poodles and hairless breeds are considered hypoallergenic, as are ferrets. Hope this helps!

I would get a chiuaua I think that’s how you spell it they don’t shed and they are very good dogs I have bad allergies and own a chiuaua and I don’t get sick around her.

It is good that you don’t want to take a chance with your son, as there is no breed of dog that is hypoallergenic. This includes designer mutts like the “Cockapoo”; this is just a backyard breeder’s (the only people who breed mixed breed dogs are backyard breeders and puppmillers) money making technique so they can get a quick buck out of their animals. They are frequently dumped in shelters because they are not hypoallergenic:

How about something like a Bearded Dragon? They aren’t for everyone but for those right owners who have done their research and are willing to give them the care they need, they can make great pets. They can be very personable.

There are also hairless rats and Guinea Pigs, both which make terrific pets. Be aware that they still have dander which your son may or may not be allergic to; it wouldn’t hurt to go to a responsible breeder’s or shelter (avoid pet stores like the plague) a few times with your son to see if he has a reaction.

I think a gecko would be a perfect pet they are very friendly and don’t have any fur.

You can try reptiles or amphiabians, or maybe a hairless animal like a rat ( not all rats are hairless though)
