kaddykat asked:

Hey,

My roomate is 22, and has lived with a cat most of her life, however I recently got a kitten, and after living with him for about 1 month, she has started having terrible congestion problems.

She thinks it is my cat’s fault.

She got Zyrtec which is helping, but how could she become alergic to a cats this late in her life?

*my cat is a short hair*

Simple. People can become allergic to anything at any time. Cat’s hair harbors lots of little organisms, including mites that your friend may never have come across before.

My husband developed an allergy to our cat after the cat had lived with us for two years. This was confirmed by an allergy test. He was 44.

You can develop allergies at any time in your life…even to things you have never been before. My mother became allergic to animal fur (short & long) at the age of 28…I developed an allergy to aspirin at the age of 24…It is however very hard to pin point the source of the allergy try removing the cat (maybe a friend could look after it for a while) for a few weeks and see if it improves if it does bingo!

I’m like your roommate - I had pets - dogs and cats my entire life and suddenly developed dander allergies in my mid 20’s. I still have 2 dogs and a cat, I just take my zyrtec daily and make sure to wash my hands after playing with them. They’re worth it!

yes you can become allergic to something at any time. Your body can just mistaken a common particle as bad and do it’s job to block it out, as soon as i turned twenty i became allergic to bananas and walnuts.

I’m older than her and I suddenly became allergic to cats … and just recently to dogs, too. We had a cat a while back and I wasn’t allergic then. A few months ago we adopted a kitten from the shelter, but I started sneezing everytime she came near. I just had that terrible feeling in my throat- coming from my lungs whenever she was near me…. I coughed and coughed like crazy. We returned the cat.
