pet allergies
FunkyDrumma asked:

I am looking for a small pet that i can play with but the big problem is that i am allergic to most animals. I have a standard poodle and am fine with him but i have problems with dogs (other than certain breeds) cats, bunnies, guinea pigs, and hamsters. those are the only animals i have had first hand experience with. I was looking into chinchillas and i think they are a good choice. I was wondering if you could help me find a pet that is friendly and playful but wont flare up my allergies. Also, any info on chinchilla allergies are great.

Thanks

Chinchillas have very long fur, but they do not shed. However, you are most likely allergic to pet dander, not pet fur. Chances are, if you’re allergic to guinea pigs or hamsters, you’ll be allergic to chinchillas. Plus, even if you weren’t allergic to chinchillas, they cost 80-130 dollars, and live from 15-30 years. If you really think you would like a pal like that, go for it! How about a bird? Most people aren’t allergic to birds. Anyway, try going to your Dr. and asking him for an allergy shot, this might help a little so you could get a hamster or gerbil. Good luck!

If you like cats you may be able to have one with out a problem. Talk to your vet first.

One common remedy for people who love cats, but are allergic to them is acepromazine. I do not know specifically how this works, but a significant amount of people says it helps with cat allergies. Get your vet to mix up 1 ml of acepromazine in 9 ml of distilled water. Give the cat 2 or so drops of the mixture each day, or you can just put the drops in his water bowl. As I said I do not know the mechanism for this, but it does help many people enjoy their cats more.

Chinchillas are awesome!! I have 2!

Only thing is their fur goes everywhere and the dust does too.

They require a very cold room b/c they hide in small caves high above sea level, so heat will stress them out and result in heat stroke.

But since they are hypoallergenic my mom let me keep mine.

If you are allergic to bunnies and guinea pigs chances are you are allergic to Chinchillas too. Chinchillas also bathe in dust - NOT WATER. They use dust to clean themselves and not a easy time for allergy sufferers.

Why not try a young adult bearded dragon? Many docile reptiles make good pets and some you don’t have feed all day or twice a day. Allergies are usually not a problem with these guys. Do your research before picking out any new pet you are unfamiliar with.

Good Luck and Keep asking questions.

Probably something with no fur. Umm a snake, frog, lizard, hairless cat, fish, turtles, etc. A chinchilla has lots of fur so i dont think they are gud pets for a person with allergies. Besides they need a really big cage to jump around in. So if you have a small house or something then they arent good pets.
