My friend had a turtle in high school it was some type of water turtle it was pretty small but not as small as a 50 cent piece i dont think turtles will say that small. a box turtle is a good turtle to get as well many family members have had them and my dad did find one that was about the size of a 50 cent piece crossing the road once.
you also may want to watch out i heard something on the news about turtles being sick. Good Luck.

No those 50 cent piece turtles can reach over 12 inches if it’s a female!!

The smallest water turtles you can get are Musks and Muds most of which get to be 3 to 4 inches. Male Maps also are a little smaller ~3-6 inch range.

Here are some care sheets for water turtles:……

You never want turtles that small with any child (using this term loosely since I do not know your son’s age). Turtles this small can carry various diseases and illnesses. Look around at your local pet shops, most of the time their turtles are almost full grown. However, most turtles you can buy legally are larger. My turtle is a painted turtle; it is about 6 inches or so long. Keeping the turtle in a smaller aquarium (approx 20 gallons) will keep them smaller since they grow according to environment. Musk and mud turtles are smaller, but they may not be available in your area.

It is technically against federal law to be able to buy a turtle under 4″ in shell length. And no, they don’t stay that small ever. If you want a turtle or tortoise that stays smaller, consider a box turtle, Russian tortoise or another small species.

JULIA F is correct. Listen to her. They are all a lot bigger than what you want. For every inch of shell on a turtle they require ten gallons of water. Keep that in mind.
