Developing an allergy to pets?

Chihiro00 asked:
Can you develop an allergy to pets you have had for a long time?
I have two guinea pigs that I’ve had for years, I keep both of them in my bedroom (plan on moving them to another room) and recently I’ve been experiencing what seems like allergic reactions. Whenever I’m in my room I get really itchy, mainly my face, arms, and hands. I have a hard time breathing and my eyes sometimes become very itchy and watery as well.
The only thing I can possibly think of that could be causing it is the animals, I start to feel alright once I leave my bedroom.

Oh, I am so sorry that you have started having a reaction to your pets. Yes, it is possible to develop allergies in adulthood. I hope that you can work it out by keeping them clean, maybe swiping them down with a damp rag every now and then and taking something like Clariton for your symptoms. Good luck.

Yes you can. I developed an allergy to my beloved cat and had to get rid of her because not only did I break out in hives, I started to develop asthma from her. You can develop an allergy to anything at any time and at any age. I hate to say it, but you may have to give up your pets. It sucks!

You can be allergic to your guinea pigs. But that doesn’t mean you have to give them away. My daughter used to put this Allerpet/C stuff on her hamsters to get rid of the allergy. It was safe for the hamster so I am sure it is safe for your lil piggies. You just wipe it on once a week. It will neutralize the protein that causes the allergic reaction.
Allergy is caused by a defect in the immune system. What happens is that your body starts to mis-identify harmless proteins as evil enemy invaders. You always have the defect, you just never know when your body is going to start having a problem with a certain protein.
Don’t take meds unless you must. The safer approach is to tackle the source of the allergen/protein. That is why the Allerpet works.
I’ll give you some links.
