How do you know your cat has asthma?

He was coughing a lot and lost almost 3 lbs. When I took him to the vet they said he had an infection in his lungs and gave him antibiotics. Three weeks later they took more xrays and said it had not cleared up much so it must be asthma. Now he is on both an antibiotic and steroids. I have lost confidence in my vet. I feel like they are just guessing. Has anyone had a similar situation? What do you suggest?

I’ve never heard of kitty asthma but thats not to say its not out there. My cat has allergies and goes into sneezing fit, breathes funny etc… he has to get allergy shots every month for his. Maybe that is the cause?

Medicine is not an exact science. Often a diagnosis is made by the process of elimination. Do you ever watch the TV show “House”? That whole show is about diagnosing through the process of elimination. Your vet is on the right track. It is possible to have both both an acute infection and asthma at the same time, so one often masks the other. Don’t give up on your vet yet, but if you are still uncomfortable after this course of treatment, get a second opinion from an unaffiliated clinic and don’t forget to bring a copy of your records and Xrays. Your vet should give you a copy of these without a problem but may charge you a fee for the copy work.
