What kind of cats can I get if my landlord is allergic to dander and where can I find them on Long Island?

My landlord is allergic to either fur or hair and said that we could not have a cat due to this. I am assuming that its the dander that she is allergic to (I was when I was younger too) and I want to have a kitten really bad. What breeds of cats should I look into that are low on dander or hairless?

If it’s in your lease that you can’t have cats then it doesn’t matter if you find one that has low dander or is hairless. You still can’t have a cat.

Both the Devon Rex and the Cornish Rex are considered “hypoallergenic” as is the Sphinx cat (which has little or no hair). The Rexes have pixi-ish faces and their coat looks like marcelled waves. I’ve had a Devon Rex (and think they look cuter than the Cornish variety) and his personality was lovely. My granddaughter is highly allergic to cats, but she had no problems with this one. The best way to find such cats as these would be to go to a cat show and talk with people who are showing their cats. Usually some will show up with litters of kittens or will have signs posted at their table indicating when/if they have kittens for sale. Or you could check your phone book yellow pages for catteries and find one that breeds the type cat you want. Or ask your vet or pet groomer; sometimes they are part of networks that place rescued animals and/or help breeders in finding homes for their animals.

if your landlord said you could have a low dandr cat, get a sphinx. they are hairless, but they have to have sweaters in cold and sunscreen in sun.

I believe I heard somewhere that Maine Coons are pretty good for people with allergies, and North Shore Animal Leage in Port Washington has tons of cats looking for homes. I’m sure you can call them and ask if they have any Maine Coons.

A Mexican hairless? And maybe in some pet stores, not sure.

Before you get a cat, get it in writing from your landlord that getting a low-allergy cat is OK.

There are 4 curly coated breeds of cats that seem to be low on the allergy scale. Cornish Rex, Devon Rex, Selkirk Rex and LaPerms. Just like curly coated breeds of dogs, they shed less and have less dander.

There is a LaPerm breeder in NY state.
