How do I know if my trouble breathing is asthma or just allergies?

SineWave asked:
I’m not aware of any allergies but lately at certain times of the day, mainly after 2pm, I struggle to take deep breathes. It’s like there are weights on my lungs that won’t allow them to expand and it takes 1o minuutes to get a good breath in. Should I see a doctor?
If I’m not experiencing the breathing problems when I visit, will they still be able to see the problem, or at least give me a treatment option?

Yes and ask him to give you a lung breath test to see how much air you take in and if there are problems.

This doesn’t sound like asthma but any time you are having trouble breathing you might want to discuss it with a doctor. Asthma is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and mucus in the airways of your lungs. Since it doesn’t sound like you are in acute distress you can make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your concerns.

Are you at the same place everyday at 2 pm? I would try to identify the trigger first no matter what it is. It could be asthma, but they may first diagnose you with RAD (reactive airway disease)–this is the diagnosis they give you before they are sure it’s asthma. I would do some research on that, and try to narrow down the trigger. Oh yeah, go to the doctor too.

When you have an asthma attack, you cannot easily draw air into your lungs. When you are having an attack (and even before) you can actually hear the air wheezing as you inhale and exhale. Asthma is caused by swelling and restriction of the bronchial tubes. It can feel like an elephant is on your chest pressing down, keeping any air from coming in. It can be very frightening, and it is serious. Treatment is usually steroids, but some new medications do not have steroids. There are several different tests that can be performed to see if you have asthma. All are performed in the office of a pulmonologist or allergist. In addition, you can use a peak flow meter in the morning and evening and then again just before or after 2:00 and compare the results.
You should most certainly get yourself to a doctor as soon as possible

Are you coughing with it? A lot of people with asthma don’t realize they’re having an asthma attack because they are told “you wheeze when you have an attack” which is very untrue. Many people just cough and cough and cough without ever wheezing. I’d get a referral to a lung specialist.
