I have been prescribed a week’s worth of oral steroids for my asthma. Among the (many!) side affects listed is weight gain. Is there any way that I can prevent this? Thanks!

Steroids will increase your appetite. You need to force yourself to control your intake, and also increase your exercise load (but be careful if you have breathing issues).

Hi Felicity,
I was/am on the same medication for my asthma. After I lost 100 pounds I don’t seem to need it as much anymore, even during intense exercise. At the beginning did have some weight gain but that was entirely my fault and not the medication. The medication alone will not make you gain weight, it may increase your appetite but ultimately you control what goes into your mouth.
Make sure you have a proper meal plan where you are eating lean protein, complex carbs and good fats (olive oil for example) and cut out sugary and fried foods. If you do find yourself slipping and eating more make sure you are exercising to increase how many calories you expend during the day and you shouldn’t have any problem with weight gain.
